چکیده

In this paper, the waveforms measured by the strain gauge in the tapping test on a number of healthy subjects and patients with Parkinson’s disease are analyzed with the objective of reaching a quantitatively evaluation of the associated symptom. It has been observed that the waveform of a patient with Parkinson’s disease becomes more irregular as the symptom is getting more serious, while the waveform of a healthy subject is rather regular. In this study, the regularity of the waveform is evaluated by the so-called trajectory parallel measure. The results show a large difference in the trajectory parallel measure of the waveforms of healthy subjects vs. those of the Parkinson’s disease patients. Furthermore, the trajectory parallel measure of Parkinson’s disease patients can be quantitatively ranked to correlate to the degree of the symptom. This paper begins with a brief description about Parkinson’s disease. The trajectory parallel measure is then introduced and applied to analysis of the waveforms of both healthy subjects and patients with Parkinson’s disease. Illustrative results are shown to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed analysis methodology. key words: Parkinson’s disease, chaos, trajectory parallel measure

Quantitative Assessment of the Arm/Hand Movements in Parkinson’s Disease Using a Wireless Armband Device

We present an approach for quantitative assessment of the arm/hand movements in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), from sensor data acquired with a wearable, wireless armband device (Myo sensor). We propose new Movement Performance Indicators that can be adopted by practitioners for the quantitative evaluation of motor performance and support their clinical evaluations. In addition, specif...

Reactions of People with Parkinson’s Disease to a Robot Interviewer

In this paper, we outline plans to create a robot capable of ethical mediation of the relationship between people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and their caregiver to alleviate discrimination due to facial masking, a symptom of PD. We also discuss the initial step in creating the mediator robot: assessing if people with PD would accept robots into their treatment. We examine the opinions of peo...

Complex feature analysis of center of pressure signal for age-related subject classification

Purpose: The aim of this study was to characterize prolonged standing and its effect on postural control in elderly individuals in comparison to adults.Materials and Methods: The elderly individuals’ behavior during standing and how demanding such a task is for them, is still unknown. We recorded the center of pressure (COP) position of 12 elder and 15 young participants while they were standin...

Correlation between lower and higher order sensory functions and manual dexterity in dominant and non-dominant hand of patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease

Objective: To investigate the correlation between lower and higher order sensory functions and manual dexterity as well as to identify the sensory measures that could predict manual dexterity in patients with idiopathic Parkinson’s disease (PD). Materials and methods: In this cross-sectional study, 55 patients with idiopathic PD by mean age of 59.85 ± 11.89 years, and mean Hoehn and Yahr stage ...

Role of 5-Hydroxytryptamine 1A Receptors in 6-Hydroxydopmaine-induced Catalepsy-like Immobilization in Rats: a Therapeutic Approach for Treating Catalepsy of Parkinson’s Disease

We have shown that buspirone, a partial agonist of 5-hydroxytryptamine 1A (5-HT1A) receptors, improves motor dysfunctions induced by 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) and haloperidol in rats. The present work extends these findings by investigating the role of 5-HT1A receptors on catalepsy-like immobilization in rats, a model of Parkinson’s disease. Catalepsy was induced by unilateral infusion of 6-OH...
